"Reach into a bag of unseen vocabulary cards, pull out a word, and come in next week with a book that relates to the word. You must somehow either embody the word, an aspect of its definition, or use the example sentence." For years, this was the exercise that began my graduate Book Art / Artists’ Books class. I almost always took on the challenge myself, and I also often utilized the strategy when demonstrating structural models. Occasionally, I still make them; it’s refreshing to step outside my usual concerns and materials.
The books shown here were made between 1998 - 2008. I never exhibited or documented them, so didn’t keep records. Over the years, other Lottery Books were lost, sold or given away. It was only recently that I realized they had, in fact, accumulated into an odd thematic body of work in their own right.
